I found the Daily Mail on the bus today and it had a story about the death of the shoe-shine. By now, you must know about my borderline obsession with dying skills and craft, but I'd never considered shoe care before. You definitely don't see shoe shiners on the street anymore, only those weird machines in hotels. I guess city boys and army boys still love a good polish though, arf. Anyway, trainers don't need polish, they just need a toothbrush and a good non-bleach cleaner.
According to the Daily Mail, the supermarket chain Asda has called on the army to start re-educating the British public on the benefits of a good shoe shine. A late April Fools? I can't find anything on the Asda website...
Apparently Berluti shoe-owners celebrate the art of good shoecare at the Swann Club, an annual dinner where they discuss how great their shoes are and spend some time lovingly cleaning them (here).
